PSTN Switch Off Explained
The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) switch-off represents one of the most significant changes to communications in the UK in many years. This transition will affect everyone, as the old analogue network will be decommissioned, prompting a shift to an internet-based phone system. This means everyone in the UK, businesses and homes will have a landline operating on a broadband connection.
The existing PSTN operates on outdated copper wiring that has been in use since 1875. This technology is certainly considered obsolete.
When Is The PSTN Switch Off?
The planned switch-off from BT Openreach is 31st January 2027. However, businesses are strongly encouraged to transition to a digital solution as soon as possible to avoid a last-minute rush.
You should no longer be able to buy a phone system operating on the PSTN as the transition has started.
PSTN Switch-Off Dates
As we approach the switch-off date, Openreach has made significant progress in phasing out the old technology.
November 2017: BT Openreach announces its intention to switch the network off. The original planned date was December 2025.
December 2020: The first area in the UK to stop selling old PSTN & ISDN lines.
October 2021: A further 169 exchanges apply the stop sell of PSTN & ISDN lines.
December 2023: Nobody in the UK can purchase a new PSTN or ISDN line.
December 2025: Openreach pushes the PSTN switch-off date back to January 2027.
January 2027: The Public Switched Telephone Network will be switched off across the UK. Anyone on the old line will no longer be able to make calls.
What The PSTN Switch-Off Means For Businesses
Businesses still using a phone line or EPOS system through PSTN or ISDN by 2027 will lose connection. Therefore, businesses are advised to switch to a fully digital internet-based phone system before this deadline.
A last-minute rush is anticipated, so transitioning to a VoIP phone that relies on your broadband is recommended.
ISDN Switch Off
Although the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a digital platform, it operates over the PSTN and will also be switched off in 2027. Some businesses may believe they are unaffected by the PSTN switch-off because they use a digital product; however, if that product relies on ISDN, they will lose service.
Devices such as card machines, EPOS systems, CCTV, and other internet-connected devices will lose connectivity if they depend on ISDN.
